Portable vs. Standby Generators: Which Does Your Home Actually Need?
"Generator" covers two genuinely different products, and a lot of buyer's remorse comes from picking the wrong category rather than the wrong model within it. Here's the actual distinction.
Portable generators
Gas-powered (usually gasoline, some dual-fuel with propane), wheeled or carried, plugged into what you need via extension cords or a manual transfer switch. Typically 3,000β10,000 watts, $500β$2,500 for the unit itself.
- Pros: Low upfront cost, no permits or licensed installation required for basic use, can be stored and only brought out when needed, works anywhere (camping, job sites, not just home backup).
- Cons: Must be manually started and refueled (gasoline doesn't store indefinitely β 6β12 months before it degrades without stabilizer), must run outdoors and far from windows/doors (see our safety guide β carbon monoxide risk is real and has caused deaths, overwhelmingly from portables run too close to living spaces), limited to a handful of circuits at a time via extension cords unless paired with a manual transfer switch, someone has to be home and available to set it up.
Standby generators
Permanently installed, connected to natural gas or a propane tank, wired into an automatic transfer switch that senses a power loss and starts the unit within seconds β no one has to be home. Typically 10,000β32,000+ watts (10β32+ kW), $8,000β$25,000+ installed.
- Pros: Fully automatic (works if you're at work, asleep, or out of town), runs as long as fuel flows (unlimited on natural gas, until the tank runs dry on propane), can cover a whole home's AC and major appliances, weekly self-test keeps it ready.
- Cons: Significant upfront cost, requires licensed electrical and gas work plus permits, fixed installation location, overkill if your actual need is "keep the fridge running for a few hours a handful of times a year."

The middle ground: inverter and dual-fuel portables
Modern inverter generators produce cleaner power (safe for sensitive electronics) and run quieter than older portable models. Dual-fuel portables can run on propane instead of gasoline, solving the "gas goes bad in storage" problem at some cost to power output. These are still portables β same outdoor-placement and manual-operation rules apply β but they're a meaningfully better version of the category than a decade ago.
Bottom line
If your honest answer to "how often does this actually happen to me" is "rarely, and I don't mind dealing with it when it does," a portable saves real money.
