Texas summer grid stress is a different animal from a Winter Storm Uri-style event β more frequent, usually far less severe, but worth understanding on its own terms rather than assuming "hot" means "the same risk as Uri, just warmer."
Why summer demand keeps climbing
Texas's population is growing, air conditioning usage climbs with it, and newer load categories β data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, and a growing base of EV charging β have added meaningful new demand on top of residential AC. ERCOT has set new summer peak demand records repeatedly in recent years. New generation, especially solar and battery storage, has also grown quickly β but the fundamental dynamic is a grid where demand and supply are both changing fast, and the margin between them is what determines how tight a given hot afternoon actually is.
What a "conservation appeal" actually means
When ERCOT's reserve margin gets thin β usually during a multi-day heat wave with light wind and low reserves β it can issue a public conservation appeal, asking residents and businesses to voluntarily reduce usage (raising thermostats a few degrees, avoiding running major appliances during peak hours, typically 3β7pm). This is a request, not an outage, and most conservation appeals in recent years have not led to forced outages β ERCOT has other tools (demand response programs, calling on additional reserves) before it needs to cut power. Treat a conservation appeal as a "the margin is thinner than usual" signal, not an emergency by itself.
How this differs from Uri
Winter Storm Uri (see our full explainer) was a supply-side collapse β generation equipment across the fleet failing simultaneously in extreme cold. Summer grid stress is usually a demand-side squeeze β everyone running AC at once on a hot, still afternoon β and Texas's grid, being built primarily for heat, is structurally better hardened against this than against extreme cold. That's not a guarantee nothing goes wrong in summer, but the risk profile and historical track record are meaningfully different.
Practical prep that doesn't require overreacting
- Have your AC serviced before peak season β an inefficient unit draws more from the grid and fails you exactly when you need it most.
- Know your circuit's essentials β if you get a rare rotating outage, which few things (fridge, a fan, medical equipment) actually need power versus what can wait.

- If you're already considering a generator, summer is actually the worst time to buy β installer demand and lead times spike right when everyone else has the same idea. Buying in a calmer month (like right after winter, ironically) often means better pricing and faster installation.
The honest bottom line
Most Texas summers pass with conservation appeals at worst, not forced outages. But "most summers" isn't "every summer," and the multi-day heat waves that do produce real strain are becoming more common as demand grows faster than some new supply comes online. If your household has real vulnerability to even a short outage β medical equipment, extreme heat sensitivity, a home office you can't afford to lose β that's a legitimate reason to plan ahead regardless of how likely this particular summer is to be the bad one.
